Energy Efficiency: Electric Vehicle vs Conventional Gasoline Vehicle?

Only about 12%–30% of the energy from the fuel you put in a conventional vehicle is used to move it down the road. The rest of the energy is lost to engine and driveline inefficiencies or used to power accessories. In an electric vehicle, about 72%–94% of the energy is used to move it down the road. Electric cars are more efficient than comparable conventional vehicles, especially in stop-and-go driving, due to the use of regenerative braking and start/stop technologies—see the Fuel Economy Guide for more information.
