(Keene, NH), September 5, 2013– The Eighth Northeast Alpine Stewardship Gathering, “The Alpine: Bellwether of Change,” will be held November 1–3, 2013, at the Sargent Center, in Hancock, New Hampshire. The event is hosted by the Monadnock Ecological Research and Education Project, (MERE), and the Department of Environmental Studies at Antioch University New England. The Northeastern Alpine Stewardship Gatherings are sponsored by the Waterman Alpine Stewardship Fund.

Researchers, planners, land managers, stewards, and others who are interested in alpine areas of the Northeast will get together to share information and learn about new research.  This year’s prestigious Guy Waterman Alpine Steward Award will be presented as part of the Gathering’s Saturday evening program.

The Northeastern Alpine Stewardship Gathering is organized and hosted by different organizations every two years, with the purpose of improving knowledge and management of the Northeast’s alpine areas.  The alpine zone is a fragile ecosystem found on the highest mountains in the Northeast and home to species found nowhere else.

“The Northeast Alpine Stewardship Gathering is the premier event of its kind for alpine researchers, stewards, and land managers,” says Julia Goren, coordinator of the Adirondack High Peaks Summit Steward Program. “There is simply no better event for sharing the latest in techniques, research, and resources within the northeastern stewardship community.”

Keynote speakers are:

Mike Jones, a biologist with the Massachusetts Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit and the president of Beyond Ktaadn, a nonprofit alpine conservation organization.

Liz Willey, a biologist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, studies rare ecosystems and wildlife from Canada to Mexico. Along with Mike Jones and others, she wrote and edited The Eastern Alpine Guide and co-founded Beyond Ktaadn.

Amy Seidl is a lecturer in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont, and the author of two books on climate change.
